NEWBERRY, SC – The Blue Bear football team fell on the road to the Newberry College Wolves Saturday, 55-0, in non-conference play.
Newberry got off to a fast start taking the opening kickoff back 67 yards to the Livingstone 28-yard line. Less than two minutes later the Wolves put the ball in the end zone through the air for a 7-0 lead. The Blue Bears' first offensive drive lasted only three plays and went two yards and ended with a punt. Newberry increased its lead to 14-0 with 9:44 left in the first quarter.
After another Livingstone punt with eight minutes left in the first quarter the Wolves marched 48 yards on five plays to go up 21-0. Sophomore quarterback Curtis Edens through an interception on the ensuing Blue Bear possession which was taken back for a touchdown and the Wolves led 28-0 after the first quarter.
Newberry held the ball to start the second quarter after blocking a Livingstone punt with just over two minutes left in the first. With 13:33 to play in the second quarter Newberry connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass to go up 35-0. The ensuing kickoff was returned 43 yards by freshman Dewayne Smith, but Livingstone could not build off this momentum and punted. The half ended with Newberry leading 35-0.
Livingstone got the kickoff to start the second half and on its third play from scrimmage fumbled the ball away to Newberry. The Wolves were able to tack on a field goal off the turnover to go up 38-0. On the next Livingstone possession Edens was intercepted. The Blue Bears returned the favor less than a minute later when junior defensive back Devonta Harmon intercepted the ball on the one-yard line. The interception didn't lead to anything for the Blue Bears as they were forced to punt.
After the Livingstone punt the Wolves took two plays before punching in a 35-yard run for a touchdown to go up 45-0. With 2:48 left in the third quarter the Blue Bears had another punt blocked which led to a 23-yard touchdown pass only seven seconds into the fourth quarter. The Wolves added another field goal with 2:35 left to reach the final score of 55-0.
Sophomore running back Miles Harris led the team with 18 rushing yards while junior Jamel Moore added 10 yards. Edens passed for 47 yards on eight completions with two interceptions. Defensively, junior linebacker Bryan Aycoth led the team with eight tackles including three for a loss of yards. Junior Shawntez Jones also added seven tackles.
The Blue Bears fell to 0-2 on the 2010 season with the loss while Newberry improved to 1-0 in their first game.
The Blue Bears will open the home portion of their season Saturday, September 11, at 6 p.m. in the Mayor's Cup against cross-town rival Catawba College.
