WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Rams of Winston-Salem State University avenged their loss to St. Augustine's last week, downing the Blue Bears of Livingstone 58-0.
The Blue Bears won the coin toss and opted to receive and despite a good run from quarterback Levon Stanley on third down, Livingstone was forced to punt. The Livingstone defense, despite missing its top two defenders in Bryan Aycoth and Shawntez Jones, held Winston to only six yards on its opening drive and forced the Rams to punt.
Livingstone was forced to punt after four plays on its next drive and the Rams returned it 52 yards which led to a touchdown on the first offensive play for a 7-0 Ram lead. After another Livingstone punt, the Rams increased their lead to 14-0 on a 23-yard rush by Nicholas Cooper.
The Blue Bears controlled the ball to start the second quarter and punter Logan Haynes was forced to kick the ball away on a fourth and 50 yards to go. The Rams returned the ball 35 yards for another touchdown and a 21-0 lead. Livingstone's next two drives combined for nine plays and only four yards gained. Winston-Salem added another seven points on a three-play, 49-yard drive capped off with a 53-yard pass completion from Kameron Smith to Jahuann Butler for a 28-0 Ram lead.
The Livingstone offense continued to struggle on its next possession, moving the ball backwards three yards on three plays. After the Livingstone punt, Winston-Salem's Nicholas Cooper rushed for a 54-yard touchdown on the first offensive play for a 35-0 lead. The Rams added a 45-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to go up 38-0.
Winston-Salem got the kickoff to start the second half and drove 50 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was missed and the Rams led 44-0. Livingstone was forced to punt on its next drive, but faked the punt and Logan Haynes rushed for a first down, but fumbled the ball which was recovered by Winston. The turnover didn't cost the Blue Bears as Winston missed a field goal. With only 16 seconds left in the third quarter the Rams got into the endzone once more on a five-yard run and after the extra point led 51-0.
The fourth quarter slowed down as the Rams worked the clock. Livingstone first drive ended on an interception, but Winston didn't get anything out of it as the Rams punted. After a Livingstone punt with just over eight minutes to play, the Rams added another touchdown to the scoreboard to go up 58-0 which worked to be the final score.
The Blue Bears finished the game with 109 yards of total offense with 80 coming through the air and 29 coming on the ground. The Rams finished with 474 yards of total offense with 292 coming via the rush and 182 coming via the pass.
Levon Stanley completed eight passes for 80 yards with one interception. Stanley was also the leading rusher with 20 yards on the ground while punter Logan Haynes had 16 total rush yards. Omar McFadden caught two passes for 24 yards while Miles Harris hauled in two catches for 20 yards. Defensively, Tyheim Pitt and Devonta Harmon led the Blue Bears each with eight tackles and Pitt recorded three tackles for loss.
The Blue Bears fell to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference with the loss while Winston-Salem State improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the CIAA.
Livingstone will head to Fayetteville State University next Saturday to take on the Broncos at 2 p.m
