Big Second Half Lifts Livingstone to 90-77 Win Over Lincoln (Pa.)

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Livingstone Blue Bears (13-16) used a big second half run to take a 90-77 win over a scrappy Lincoln (Pa.) Lions (9-20) team that made them fight for every point in the game. The game was a hard-fought affair with the two teams battling for every point, but in the end, it was a XX-X second half run by the Blue Bears that sealed the win and sent the team to the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. Both teams gave a great effort in the game, but in the end, the Blue Bears were able to come out with the victory.

As a team, the Blue Bears shot a scorching hot 49.2% (32-of-65) from the floor while Lincoln (Pa.) was equally impressive shooting 40.6% (26-of-64) from the floor. Livingstone was led by the senior trio of forward Ty Newman, who recorded a double-double 14 points with 14 rebounds, fellow senior guard Daryl Trynham, who recorded 17 points with five assists, and senior guard Eric Dubose who scored 17 points as well.

Lincoln (Pa.) was led by sophomore guard Quaman Burton's 17 points while fellow sophomore guard Jordan Watson added 16 points, including going three-for-nine from the three-point line. Junior forward Joshua Davis and sophomore guard Sean James both added 12 points each off the bench as well.

The game was a hard-fought affair that began with a thrilling first half. The intensity began early as a Davis jumper at the 14:06 mark in the half gave the Lions a 12-7 lead, the largest by either team for the first 15 minutes of the game. Livingstone would answer the run with back-to-back three-pointers from Dubose that put the Blue Bears back on top, 13-12 with 13:24 left in the half. This would remain close until the final minutes of the half with Livingstone went on an eight-point run, capped by three straight Tryham free throws with 4:58 left to play that left Livingstone on top, 37-31. But as quickly as Livingstone built the lead, it was erased when Lincoln (Pa.) answered with a personal five-point Lion run by Watson that pulled Lincoln (Pa.) to within a point of the Blue Bears, 42-41 with 2:14 left to play. A Tryham three-pointer and a Lion lay-up from junior guard Antonio Depina rounded out the half and left the Blue Bears with a 44-43 lead heading into the locker room.

The second half was as intense as the first half, but a late Livingstone run took the drama out of the equation as the Blue Bears pulled away late for the win. Livingstone jumped out early in the second half as they build a 50-43 lead after six straight points, including a lay-up from sophomore forward Ramel Belfield at the 18:08 mark. From there, the Lions found themselves looking to claw their way back into the game with a Watson three-point play at the 14:35 mark capped a six-point run by the Lions and pulled the team to within three points, 56-53. It was then that Livingstone would take control of the game and never looked back.

The Blue Bears went on a furious 12-3 run to go ahead 68-56 after a Trynham layup at the 12:24 mark. From there, the Blue Bears remained in control of the game, as Lincoln (Pa.) would get no closer than seven points after a James layup at the 6:07 mark left the Lions trailing the Blue Bears, 74-67. In the final six minutes of play the route was on for the Blue Bears as the team went ahead by as many as 17 points, 90-73 after a Newman lay-up with 1:53 left to play. Lincoln (Pa.) added four more points in the final minute with a James lay-up and a pair of free throws, but the effort was not enough and the Blue Bears went on to claim the victory.

With the win, Livingtone advances to the quarterfinal round of the tournament where they will face the division champion Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in a 7:00 p.m. game, tomorrow evening at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Lincoln (Pa.) ends the 2015-16 season with a 9-20 overall record.
