RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Livingstone College men's basketball team defeated the Falcons of St. Augustine's University 90-89 in overtime on Wednesday, thanks to
Eric Mayo's crucial free throws.
Although both teams battled point-for-point the first four minutes of the contest, the Blue Bears struggled offensively in the first half (shooting 39.3 percent from the floor), while St. Augustine's came out firing 52.9 percent.
The Falcons didn't lead by double figures until a pair of free throws gave them a 24-14 advantage at the 9:49 minute mark. By the end of the half, the Falcons led by as many as 18 points. The Falcons' offensive rebounding went in their favor, as they scored 15 points off of second chances.
Livingstone trailed 44-29 at the half.
With 14:45 left to play, the Blue Bears went on a 17-3 run, aided by
Anthony Welch's back-to-back three pointers to cut the Blue Bears' deficit to 47-43. On the next play, Welch hit another triple to make it a one-point game.
Mayo tied the game 52-52 with 12:35 left to play with a layup. Livingstone took its first lead of the second half after Jody Hill hit a 3-pointer from the corner. The Falcons countered with a jumper to regain the lead.
SAU tied the game 61-61 around the 8:30 mark, and then took the lead by one point at the free throw line.
With 6:43 left to play,
Mark Thomas found Hill beyond the arc, cutting the Falcons' lead to 66-64. St. Augustine's made a quick bucket, but Hill responded with two 3-pointers for the lead. In the last five minutes of the game, the lead went both ways with each team leading by at least three points.
Mayo tied the game at 80-80 with 46 seconds left to play. Â The Falcons answered with 15 seconds left to play. With 3.7 seconds left, Thomas was fouled beyond the arc. He converted two of three shots to take the game into overtime.
Thomas was the first to score for Livingstone in overtime, but the Falcons managed to tie the game twice. With two seconds left, Mayo's free throws sealed the Blue Bears victory.
The Blue Bears improved to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in the CIAA.
Livingstone finished with five players in double figures. Thomas finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists. Mayo and Hill scored 16 points apiece, while Welch finished with 13 points.
Emarri Bailey finished with 11 points.
Livingstone will close the regular season on Wednesday at Winston-Salem State at 7:30 p.m.
