WINSTON-SALEM, NC – A hot-shooting Winston-Salem State women's basketball team and a bevy of turnovers plagued the Blue Bears Monday as the Rams beat Livingstone 99-69 at the C.E. Gaines Center.
Livingstone couldn't buy a bucket in the first four minutes of Monday's contest as Winston-Salem jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Cierra York finally got the Blue Bears on the board with 15:55 on the clock and the Blue Bears were able to make a small run to get back within 16-8.
The Rams were able to open a 28-14 lead over Livingstone with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, but the Blue Bears made a strong 9-1 run to get within six at 29-23 with 7:08 to play. Livingstone again went cold from the field as Winston-Salem went on a 23-7 run over the final 6:12 of the first half to take a 52-30 lead into the break.
The Blue Bears were unable to mount any sort of comeback in the second half. The Rams hit their largest lead of 33 points with 5:09 remaining before taking the 99-69 victory.
Livingstone had four players in double-figures, but got very little production out of its post players. Kelcyn Manurs and Tiffany Evans each scored 14 points while Cierra York finished with 11 points and Sophie Lepzem added 10 points. York also led the Blue Bears on the boards with seven rebounds.
The Blue Bears shot 35.8 percent from the field including 26.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc. At the free-throw line, Livingstone added 16 points on 23 attempts.
Winston-Salem State dominated the Blue Bears in the point, outscoring Livingstone 44-28 down low. The Rams also took advantage of 25 Livingstone turnovers, turning them into 36 points.
The Blue Bears will return to New Trent Gym for their final home game of the season Saturday when they host the Broncos of Fayetteville State University at 5:30 p.m.
