SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone women's basketball team was unable to contain the hot second-half shooting of the Chowan University Hawks Thursday evening as the Blue Bears fell 70-68.
Chowan got off to a strong start, taking the first seven points of the game, but the Blue Bears responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take an 8-7 lead just over 5 minutes into the contest.
For the rest of the first half the two teams went back and forth trading leads, but Livingstone was able to work a six-point lead over the Hawks with 2:48 left in the first half. Chowan, however, was able to close the first half on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 27-27 going into the break.
The Blue Bears came out on fire to start the second half, going on a 12-2 run in less than five minutes to take a 39-29 lead with 15:53 on the clock. Chowan responded with a big run of its own, a 10-0 run, that tied the game at 39-39 with 14:22 remaining in the contest.
After the Hawks tied the game, they took hold of a lead and were able to advance to as much as a five-point advantage with 10:15 left to play. Livingstone turned the tables on the Hawks with an 11-0 run to grab a 60-54 lead with 6:16 on the clock.
Livingstone continued to lead by six with 3:38 to play, but the Hawks rattled off six-straight points to tie the game at 64-64 with 2:17 remaining. The final six points for Chowan came completely at the free throw line. Chowan led by four with 21 seconds left and Kelcyn Manurs got the Blue Bears back within two, but the Hawks converted those attempts down the stretch to ice the game.
Livingstone was led by Tyesha Tharpe who recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Also finishing in double-figure scoring was Jasmine Murray with 11 points and Elicia Gilliam-Washington with 10 points.
The Blue Bears shot 36 percent from the field for the game, but struggled from three-point range, hitting only 1-of-10 attempts. Free throws were also a problem as Livingstone converted a season-low, 48.1 percent of its attempts. Chowan shot 45.5 percent for the game including a blistering 60.9 percent in the second half.
Livingstone will return to play on Saturday when they host the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls at 5:30 p.m.
