Blue Bears Unable To Overcome Early Deficit in 82-76 Loss at Virginia Union

Final Stats

RICHMOND, VA
– The Livingstone women's basketball team fell behind by 16 points in the first half Saturday and in the end couldn't complete a comeback as the Blue Bears fell 82-76 on the road to the Virginia Union Panthers.

Both teams came out with a very quick pace Saturday evening and after Kelcyn Manurs drained a three-pointer with 18:38 on the clock, the Blue Bears held a 5-4 edge.  The Livingstone lead didn't last long as Virginia Union responded with a 20-4 run to take a 24-9 lead with 5:54 left in the first half.

The Panthers increased their lead to as much as 16 points with 2:05 remaining, but the Blue Bears were able to finish the first half on a 7-0 run and trailed 29-20 at the break.

Through the first 15 minutes of the second half the Blue Bears weren't really able to cut much into the Virginia Union lead, but were able to continually stay within striking distance.  With 3:19 left to play, Livingstone found itself down 71-61.  The Blue Bears battled back to get within five, but couldn't get the critical defensive stop down the stretch to complete a comeback.

Kelcyn Manurs led the Blue Bears with 23 points while Tyesha Tharpe recorded her first double-double as a Blue Bear with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Livingstone shot 38.4 percent from the field including 26.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc.  The Blue Bears were also 15-for-20 from the charity stripe.

The Blue Bears will play the final game of their four-game road swing on Monday against the Bulldogs of Bowie State University at 5:30 p.m.
