RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University Bears dominated the Livingstone women's basketball team in the paint Monday evening as the Blue Bears fell 81-71.
Livingstone (12-6, 7-4) got out to a hot start in the first half, grabbing a 10-2 lead just over four minutes into the contest, but then had multiple stretches where they failed to score. After trailing 10-2, Shaw (13-10, 6-6) went on a 14-1 run to take a 16-11 lead before Khalia Boston put an end to the Bear run with a big three-pointer.
The Blue Bears retook a 22-21 lead after a three-pointer by Brittany Wright, but again went cold from the field as Shaw went on a 12-2 run to take a 34-24 lead with 4:28 left. Each Livingstone basket was met by another by Shaw on the other end, not allowing the Blue Bears to make much headway before the half. Shaw took a 45-31 lead into the break.
Livingstone slowly worked their way back into the contest at the start of the second half. With just less than four minutes gone in the second period the Blue Bears had gotten within seven at 50-43. The Blue Bears continued to fight and got within six at 60-54 with 11:14 to go.
As the clock ticked under 10 minutes left in the contest the Blue Bears trailed by 10, but Shaw put a real dagger in the Blue Bears' chances with a four-point play with 9:25 left. Despite the big play by the Bears, Livingstone still continued to battle and with 5:18 to play was within seven, but didn't get any closer.
The Blue Bears shot the ball decently well on Monday, hitting 33.3 percent of their shots from the field including 45 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Free throws were a struggle as Livingstone hit only 61.6 percent of their attempts. Shaw outscored the Blue Bears 42-24 in the paint. Livingstone capitalized on 30 Shaw turnovers with 25 points, but it wasn't enough.
Livingstone will head home for a non-conference contest on Thursday when they host Bennett College at 5:30 p.m.
