RALEIGH, NC – Trone Jackson scored a career-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Livingstone men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped Monday evening by the Shaw University Bears, 89-79.
Shaw and Livingstone battled back and forth through the first 10 minutes of the contest and the Bears of Shaw held a slim 24-22 edge with 8:10 left after Darius Cox converted two free-throw attempts. Shaw then went on a 9-2 run to open up an 11-point edge at 35-24 with 4:39 left. Livingstone trailed 39-29 with 2:03 remaining in the first half, but closed the half on an 8-2 run to get within four at 41-37 at the break.
The Blue Bears stayed within striking distance of Shaw through the first four minutes of the second half and trailed by nine with 16:17 remaining, but a 10-0 run by Shaw opened up a 19-point lead with 11:24 left in the contest. Despite the large deficit, Livingstone fought back and two free throws by Trone Jackson with 6:37 remaining got the Blue Bears back within 10. Over the final five minutes, Livingstone managed to get only within nine points before falling 89-79.
Livingstone fell to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the conference with the loss while Shaw improved to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in the CIAA.
Jackson led the Blue Bears with a career-high 23 points in only 22 minutes on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Greg Henry also added 14 points while Donte Durant and Darius Cox also added 12 points. Cox came up just short of a double-double as he grabbed nine boards. Shaw's Tony Smith recorded a triple-double, scoring 14 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out 14 assists.
Livingstone shot 38.7 percent from the field on Monday including 22.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 69.6 percent from the free-throw line. Shaw had a monster night from the field, shooting 56.4 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. Livingstone had come into the game leading all of Division II in three-point field goal defense, allowing only 25.1 percent of three-point attempts.
Livingstone will step away from conference play on Thursday when they head to the nation's capital to take on the University of the District of Columbia for a 7 p.m. contest.
