CHARLOTTE, NC – The Livingstone women's basketball team went nearly seven minutes without a field goal to start the second half Saturday as Pfeiffer built a 16-point lead that the Blue Bears couldn't overcome as they fell 73-64 to the Falcons in the Queen City Classic.
Livingstone picked up the first two points of the game, but Pfeiffer then went on a tear, not missing a shot in the first two minutes and grabbing a 9-2 lead. Pfeiffer slowly worked to increase its lead, but seven-straight points by freshman Cierra York kept the Blue Bear deficit to single digits.
The Falcons reached their largest lead of the first half of with 7:02 remaining. Down by 15, the Blue Bears went on a 9-0 run to get within six with 3:27 left in the half. The Blue Bears kept the deficit to a workable margin at the half, trailing 34-27.
The second half couldn't have started worse for Livingstone as the Blue Bears went nearly seven minutes without a field goal, while in that time the Falcons opened a 16-point lead. Jasmine Murray connected on the first shot from the field in the second half for the Blue Bears with 13:09 left.
Livingstone started hitting shots on the offensive end, but couldn't get the crucial defensive stop to make a true run at Pfeiffer. The Blue Bears got only as close as eight points for the remainder of the second half as Pfeiffer did just enough to take the 73-64 victory.
Junior guard Kelcyn Manurs, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Blue Bears with 23 points which included going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Freshman Cierra York also scored in double figures with 13 points and had five rebounds.
The Blue Bears shot 31.9 percent from the field including 21.1 percent from long range. Livingstone improved its free-throw shooting Saturday, converting 14 of 20 attempts from the charity stripe.
The Blue Bears will return to action on Tuesday when they host Catawba College at 7:30 p.m. at New Trent Gymnasium.
