Blue Bears Down Fayetteville 80-70 As Three Score in Double Figures

, NC – Three Blue Bears scored in double figures, as Livingstone avenged an earlier loss to Fayetteville State as they defeated the Broncos 80-70.

 

The Blue Bears sent seniors Megail Cannon, Aaron Caruthers and Keith Darden out in style as it was the trio's final home game.

 

With the victory, the Blue Bears improved to 11-13 overall, 8-10 in the conference and 3-5 in the division.  Fayetteville fell to 7-16 overall, 4-13 in the CIAA and 2-6 in the division.

 

Sophomore forward Greg Henry recorded his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, which is a career-high for Henry.  Junior guard Jarred Stockton added 25 points and junior forward Donte Durant scored 17 points.

 

Livingstone came out of the gate and grabbed an early 7-2 lead over the Broncos.  Fayetteville battled back and went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-7 lead with 13:09 left in the first half.  The teams then traded buckets and the lead up and down the court. 

 

Fayetteville held a five-point edge over the Blue Bears with 6:07 left in the opening half, but Livingstone was able to take seven straight points to take a two-point lead with 4:18 left in the half.  A three-pointer by Donte Durant with three seconds left in  the first half gave the Blue Bears a five-point lead at the break, 35-30.

 

Jarred Stockton scored 14 points in the opening half and Donte Durant added 11.  Greg Henry had seven of his game-high 14 rebounds in the opening half as well.

 

After Livingston started the second half strong and pushed its lead to seven points, the Broncos responded and tied the game at 40-40 with 15:32 left in the game.  Each time that the Blue Bears were able to grab a lead in the second half, the Broncos battled back.  Livingstone led by six points with 12:55 to play, but with 11:04 left the game was again tied at 48-48.

 

After the 48-48 tie, the Blue Bears went on a 17-2 run and took a 15-point lead over the Broncos with 5:24 to play in the contest.  Fayetteville was only briefly able to cut the deficit under 10 points and Livingstone hung on to defeat the Broncos 80-70.

 

The Blue Bears shot 43.1 percent from the field including 36 percent from beyond the arc.  Livingstone held the rebound advantage 43-40, but Fayetteville dominated in the paint 26-18.

 

The Livingstone men will travel to St. Augustine's on Friday for a makeup game against the Falcons.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
