SALISBURY, NC – Four Blue Bears scored in double-figures Saturday evening as the Livingstone women's basketball snapped a four-game losing skid by downing the Chowan University Hawks 85-68.
Senior guard Kayler McBride led all scorers with 22 points and also seven assists. Junior forward Brittany Wright scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds while fellow junior forward Cassaundra Rhodes came up one boards shy of a double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was sophomore guard Rashida Elbourne who added 10 points.
Livingstone (9-15, 5-12, 3-4) had the hot-shooting hand in the first half as the Blue Bears shot 5.17 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from long range. Chowan came out of the gate and took the first four points of the contest before back-to-back three-pointers by McBride gave Livingstone a 6-4 lead.
After two free throws by the Hawks (9-14, 6-12, 2-6), the Blue Bears led by two with 12:08 to play, but a 7-0 run by the Blue Bears gave them a nine-point edge with 10:34 left in the first half. Livingstone pushed its lead to double digits at 10 points with 8:02 left in the opening half. The Blue Bears hit their largest lead of the half of 17 points with 3:51 to play, but Chowan ended the half on a 12-5 run and trailed by only 10 at halftime.
Kayler McBride led the Blue Bears with 11 points at the break and Brittany Wright had 10 of her 21 points at halftime. The Blue Bears shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first half and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.
In the second half, the Hawks only briefly were able to bring their deficit under 10 points, before the Blue Bears grabbed full control of the contest. Livingstone's lead reached 20 points with 7:55 to play as it led 72-52. The Blue Bears never allowed the Hawks any opportunities to get back into the contest and took the game 85-68.
For only the second time this season, the Blue Bears shot better than 50 percent from the field as they hit 33 of their 65 shot attempts (.508). Livingstone also hit 42.1 percent of its three-point attempts. The Blue Bears got good production from their reserve players as they outscored the Chowan bench players 32-19.
The victory, Livingstone's second over Chowan this season, improved its overall record to 9-15, 5-12 in the CIAA and 3-4 in the division. Chowan fell to 9-14 overall, 6-12 in the conference and 2-6 in the western division.
The Blue Bears will return to the court for their final home game on Monday evening when they host Fayetteville State. It will be senior night and Kayler McBride will be recognized prior to the contest.
