Blue Bear Men Fall to Chowan 65-59

– The Livingstone men's basketball team was held to only three points over the final two minutes Saturday as the Chowan Hawks downed the Blue Bears 65-59.

 

Senior guard Megail Cannon led the Blue Bears with 15 points, but early foul trouble in the second half limited his overall production.  Sophomore forward Greg Henry added 11 points and senior guard Aaron Caruthers scored 10 points in the losing effort.

 

The first half was a battle between the Hawks and Blue Bears as the lead was exchanged 12 times over the course of the first 20 minutes.  Livingstone got out to the early lead and led by six points with 14:25 showing on the clock.  Chowan battled back to take a four-point edge with 10:52 to go, but Livingstone again responded.

 

Over the final eight minutes of the first half the teams traded buckets and the lead up and down the court.  Chowan led by one with 2:50 to play, but Livingstone took six of the final eight points of the second half to grab a 30-27 halftime lead. 

 

Megail Cannon scored 12 points in the first half, but had three fouls after the first 20 minutes.  Greg Henry had eight points and four boards in the first half as well.

 

The second half played out much like the first as the two teams traded buckets and the lead back and forth.  In the second half, the lead changed hands an additional 13 times.  Livingstone's largest lead of the second half was only three points and that came with 14:57 left in the contest. 

 

With 7:06 left in the game, the Blue Bears led by one at 50-49, but a 5-0 run by the Hawks gave them a four-point advantage with 3:47 showing on the clock.  Despite being down by four, the Blue Bears went on a 6-0 run of their own and grabbed a two-point lead after a Jarred Stockton three-pointer with 2:21 to play.  Over the final two minutes of the game the Blue Bears were held to only one three-pointer with 12 seconds left in the game, while Chowan connected on all nine of their free-throw attempts down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

 

Livingstone shot 40 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from beyond the arc while Chowan shot 41.8 percent from the field.  Second-chance points aided the Hawks as they outscored the Blue Bears 13-8 in that respect.

 

With the loss the Blue Bears fell to 10-13 overall, 7-10 in the CIAA and 2-5 in the division.  Chowan improved to 15-8 overall, 11-6 in the conference and 4-3 in the western division.

 

The Blue Bears will host their final home game of the season on Monday against Fayetteville State.  Monday will be the final home game for seniors Keith Darden, Aaron Caruthers and Megail Cannon.  Each of them will be recognized prior to the contest.
