Blue Bears Down Morris 98-65

Darius Cox Leads Livingstone With 21 Points

– The Livingstone men's basketball team picked up its second win of the season Thursday, defeating the Morris College Hornets 98-65 inside Trent Gymnasium.

 

With the victory the Blue Bears improved to 2-1 on the season.

 

Livingstone got off to a fast start, taking the first eight points of the contest in the first 2:29, forcing Morris into a timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, Morris went on a 12-2 run to take a 12-10 lead with 13:44 left in the first half.  The Blue Bears battled back to regain the lead, but couldn't break away from the Hornets, holding only a one-point edge as the clock ticked under 10 minutes left in the half.

 

The Blue Bears slowly increased their lead over the next five minutes and held a 10-point lead at 37-27 with 4:32 left in the opening half.  Over the final 3:15 of the first half the Blue Bears went on a 13-5 run, allowing them to take a 53-37 lead into the break.

 

To start the second half, Livingstone went on a 12-4 run over the first 4:38 to take a 65-41 lead over Morris.  The Hornets tried to stay within striking distance of the Blue Bears but Livingstone used another 12-2 run midway through the half to grab a commanding 30-point lead with 10:28 left.  The Blue Bears finished off the Hornets 98-65.

 

Senior Darius Cox led five Blue Bears in double-figure scoring with 21 points and eight rebounds.  Junior Greg Henry finished with 15 points while Quintin Redfern, Trone Jackson and Omar Ford-Bey each finished with 11 points.

 

The Blue Bears shot 46.9 percent from the field including 31.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc for the game.  Livingstone won the rebounding battle 49-34.  The Blue Bears took full advantage of the Hornet turnovers, scoring 35 points off the Morris mistakes.

 

The Blue Bears will stay at home on Saturday evening when they host the St. Paul's College Tigers for a 5 p.m. contest.  The game will be a non-conference game.
