Blue Bears Down Pfeiffer 73-58 Behind Elbourne's Career-High 29 Points

Rashida Elbourne scored a career-high 29 points and Brittany Wright recorded her second straight double-double as the Livingstone women's basketball team downed the Pfeiffer University Falcons 73-58 in the third game of the 2010 Queen City Classic hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.

 

Elbourne scored 29 points in 36 minutes of play on 13-of-22 shooting from the floor.  Wright scored 14 points and pulled down 13 boards for a back-to-back double-double.  Montiya Harrison just missed a double-double as she finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

 

The first half was a roller coaster for the Blue Bears.  Livingstone led 2-0 and again at 6-5 before Pfeiffer went on a 10-2 run to open up a 15-8 lead.  The Blue Bears responded in a big way going on a 10-3 run of their own to tie the game at 18-18 with 10:55 left in the first half.

 

Pfeiffer turned the tables on the Blue Bears again, going on an 11-0 run to grab a commanding 29-18 lead with 6:29 to play in the first half.  Livingstone continued to fight and went on an 18-2 run over the final 6:02 of the first half and took a 36-31 lead into the break.

 

Elbourne recorded 16 points in 17 minutes in the first half on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor and two points from the charity stripe.  Wright also added eight points and six rebounds in the opening stanza.

 

Pfeiffer came out with a quick 5-2 run to open the second half and got within two at 38-36, but that was the closest that the Falcons got to the Blue Bears in the second half.  With just over 10 minutes left the Blue Bears had opened a 13-point lead over Pfeiffer.

 

Montiya Harrison gave the Blue Bears their largest lead of the game with two minutes left on a three-pointer as Livingstone led 71-51.  The Falcons tried to make a late charge against the Blue Bears, but the lead was insurmountable as Livingstone took the contest 73-58.

 

The Blue Bears shot 43.1 percent from the floor including 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc while Pfeiffer hit 34.5 percent of its shots from the field.  Livingstone dominated the boards, grabbing 51 rebounds to Pfeiffer's 39.  Livingstone also dominated down low, scoring 32 points in the paint.

 

With the victory the Blue Bears improved to 1-1 on the season while the Falcons fell to 0-2.

 

The Blue Bears will stay on the road Tuesday when they head across town to Goodman Gymnasium on the campus of Catawba College for a 6:00 p.m. tilt with the Indians.
