Blue Bears Fall to Shaw 34-0 on Homecoming

Box Score

SALISBURY
, NC
– The Blue Bear football team gained only 26 yards of total offense Saturday as Livingstone fell to Shaw 34-0 on Homecoming.

In the first half the Blue Bear defense held the Shaw offense to only 14 points.  Shaw got on the board first with 9:10 left in the first quarter.  After a Livingstone punt, Shaw's Raymond Williams ran for 34 yards to the end zone for a touchdown and a 7-0 Shaw lead.  While the Livingstone defense was limiting Shaw, the Blue Bear offense managed only 21 offensive yards in the first quarter.

In the second quarter Shaw was kept off the scoreboard until there was only 1:07 left in the half.  Shaw started its drive with 1:57 on the clock and took only three plays to go the 28 yards needed to extend the score to 14-0.

Shaw received the opening kickoff of the second half and started with a short field.  The Bears took 10 plays to advance the ball 40 yards and completed their first drive with a 37-yard field goal to make the score 17-0.  Livingstone's next two drives went for a total of negative four yards and Shaw extended its lead to 20-0 with a 43-yard field goal with 2:14 left in the third quarter.

The Blue Bears caught a break early in the fourth quarter.  Shaw looked to be going in for another score, but a fumble at the two yard line was recovered by the Blue Bears.  On the third play after the turnover, sophomore quarterback Erik Wallace threw an interception which eventually led to another Shaw touchdown for the Bears to lead 27-0.

The most promising drive for the Blue Bears was started by an interception by freshman Dequan Thompson at the goal line.  Thompson returned the ball 84 yards to the Shaw 16 yard line before being tackled.  Despite the defensive boost, the Livingstone offense moved the ball only two total yards on five plays before turning the ball over on downs.

Offensively the Blue Bears had 39 yards passing and negative 13 yards rushing, accounting for only three first downs.  Sophomore quarterback Levon Stanley completed three passes for 23 yards while sophomore Curtis Edens connected on 2 passes for 16 yards.  Kristopher Moton was the leading rusher for the Blue Bears, gaining 8 yards on three rushing attempts.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Shaw Bears rushed for 253 yards and threw for another 177 yards.  Juniors Bryan Aycoth, Justin Johnson and Devonta Harmon tied for the team lead in tackles, each recording eight.  Aycoth and Harmon each had a fumble recovery and an interception while Johnson had two pass breakups.

With the loss the Blue Bears fell to 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in the conference while Shaw improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Blue Bears will return to Alumni Memorial Stadium next Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host the West Virginia Wesleyan Tigers.
