COLUMBIA, SC – In a game that lasted nearly two and a half hours and the teams combined for 57 fouls, the Livingstone women's basketball team won their second straight contest, defeating the Allen University Yellow Jackets 88-67 Wednesday evening.
With the victory the Blue Bears improved to 6-9 while Allen fell to 2-12.
Junior forward Brittany Wright and sophomore guard Elicia Gilliam-Washington led the Blue Bears with 15 points each. Wright also added eight rebounds. Also in double-figure scoring was freshman guard Kelcyn Manurs with 13 and junior guard Montiya Harrison with 10 points. Senior guard Kayler McBride contributed seven points, seven steals and eight assists.
The Blue Bears, coming off their 112-point performance Monday evening found themselves in a fight with the Yellowjackets early in the game. Allen took the early lead, but battled back from a 4-3 deficit to take an 11-6 lead with five minutes gone in the half. The Blue Bears got their lead up to double digits at 23-12 before Allen mounted a comeback.
Allen went on a 6-0 run to get within five at 23-18, but Livingstone was able to go on a run of their own. The Blue Bears got their lead back to 31-22 and Allen made yet another run. Allen was able to get within four points with 1:29 to play, but the Blue Bears took the final four points of the half to take an eight-point edge into the break.
Brittany Wright led the Blue Bears with 11 points in the first half hitting five of her six field goal attempts. Wright also pulled down three rebounds. Elicia Gilliam-Washington also scored seven points.
Livingstone came out in the second half and grabbed the first six points to take a 46-32 lead. With the score at 46-34, the Blue Bears went on a 9-3 run to open a 14-point advantage with 13:51 remaining in the contest.
Livingstone's lead over the Yellow Jackets hit 20 points at 69-49 with 7:50 on the clock in the second half. The Blue Bears' largest lead of 24 points came at 79-55 with 3:49 left in the game. The only thing keeping the game from becoming a total blowout was the free-throw shooting of the Yellow Jackets who shot 28-of-55 from the charity stripe.
As a team the Blue Bears shot 34.8 percent from the field but only 16.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Livingstone got to the free-throw line 40 times, converting 22 of their attempts. The Blue Bears totaled 30 steals for the game, a new school record.
The Blue Bears will return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to face Virginia State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
