Salisbury, NC- The men's basketball team opened strong in front of their home crowd on Monday (Jan. 12) inside New Trent Gym. The Blue Bears soared past the Hawks of Chowan University 86-79, which now places them at 9-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Hawks drop to 9-6, and 3-3 in the conference.
Ty Newman was the answer for the Blue Bears on Monday, finishing with 24 points, three rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block.
When Newman was asked what made him spark the way he did on the court, he replied "Frustration was my motivation. We have way too much talent on the floor and too many leaders to not walk away with a win. Every night we have different leaders on the court and tonight was my night."
The Hawks made a mark early in the game making a 6-0 run, but the Blue Bears did not let that hurt their momentum, it made them fight even harder.
The team had an outstanding showing, with a couple of impressive dunks from Dwight Williams and Eric Mayo, who both finished with 13 and 17 points respectively.
The Blue Bears' largest lead of the game was by 23 points in the first half at the 2:00 mark.
The Blue Bears went into the locker room with a 49-30 deficit over the Hawks.
After the half, the momentum slightly changed on both ends, with both teams fighting to find their offensive rhythm.
"We did not have the same intensity as the first half, we left it in the locker room and got way too comfortable. But I am just glad we were able to pull out the win," said Eric Mayo.
The hawks slipped within seven points at one point in the second half, causing the Blue Bears to cling to their advantage even harder.
Despite the offensive efforts, the Hawks could not bounce back and the Blue Bears went on to take the home victory.
Mayo finished with his 7th double-double of the season with 17 points, and 10 rebounds. He added two steals, and three assists.
Williams chipped in three rebounds, and two blocks.
Eric Dubose finished with nine points. Dubose added two rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
The Blue Bears will travel to Shaw University on Saturday (Jan. 17). The men will tip-off at 4:00 P.M.
