Blue Bears Suffer 94-90 OT Loss

Elizabeth City, NC - The Livingstone College men's basketball team suffered a 94-90 overtime loss to Elizabeth City State University on Thursday night.

The Blue Bears had three players to score double figures.

It was an intense first half for Livingstone. The Blue Bears trailed by as much as nine points as Elizabeth City controlled the first half. Although the Blue Bears battled back-and-forth with the Vikings, they managed to pull within five points to end the first half 31-26.

The Blue Bears stepped up their offense in the second half with the help of Jody Hill, who is fourth in scoring in the CIAA, as he hit back-to-back three pointers to assist the Blue Bears in outscoring the Vikings.  The Vikings fouled Hill with 29 seconds left in the game. Hill converted both of his free throws to tie the game 76-76.

The true senior guard Mark Thomas had an opportunity to end the game, but a missed layup took the game into overtime. Thomas contributed eight points to the score in overtime, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Vikings. Thomas finished the game with a game-high 30 points, six steals and five assists.

Hill followed Thomas' performance with 19 points.

Anthony Welch hit three-of-five shots from behind the three point line and contributed 11 points to the score.

Daresse Johnson played big in the paint as he snatched nine rebounds for the Blue Bears.

The Blue Bears shot a dismal 38 percent from the field, but found much success at the free throw line, shooting 75 percent.

The loss drops the Blue Bears to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Livingstone will return to action on Saturday, January 11 as they travel to Petersburg, VA to go head-to-head with the Trojans of Virginia State University. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
