In an over capacity Trent Gymnasium, the Livingstone college men's basketball team made school history with their 60-55 win over Winston-Salem State University.
Mark Thomas' double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds, paced the Blue Bears to their first CIAA Southern Division Championship.
The night began with a senior celebration.
Ethan Anderson, Eladio Espinosa,
Omar Ford-Bey and
Tyler Johnson were among the 11 senior student-athletes to be recognized. The game began with both teams tied for first place in the CIAA southern division.
The game was played very close with the Blue Bears leading by as much as nine points in the first half. The Blue Bears ended the first half ahead 32-24.
Omar Ford-Bey and Espinosa hit big shots for Livingstone and finished with nine points apiece. Espinosa added 11 rebounds to his last night as a Blue Bear.
Johnson added to Livingstone's rebounding success (53-33) over the Rams; he pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Both teams were held to a low scoring average. The Rams finished 37.9 percent while Livingstone hit only 20-of-63 shots (31 percent).
The win sets a new school record for most wins in a single season at 20-5 overall.
Livingstone will receive a first round bye in the CIAA tournament and will begin play on Thursday, February 28.
