RALEIGH, NC – The Livingstone men's basketball team was unable to complete the season sweep of the Shaw Bears Monday evening as they fell 66-45.
Sophomore forward Greg Henry led the Blue Bears with 17 points in 37 minutes of play. Junior guard Donte Durant added nine and senior center Keith Darden added eight.
Livingstone, and particularly Donte Durant, got out to a strong start in the first part of the game as Durant had six of the Blue Bears first eight points and the Blue Bears led 8-2. Shaw got back within 8-7 and two teams started trading buckets up and down the floor.
Shaw trailed 16-12 with 7:30 remaining in the first half, but managed to rattle off a 10-0 run to grab a 22-16 lead with 2:59 left in the half. Livingstone's last four points of the half all came at the charity stripe and Shaw took a 28-20 lead into the break.
Keith Darden led the Blue Bears in the first half with eight points while Donte Durant totaled seven points. Darden and Jarred Stockton each had three rebounds in the first half.
The Shaw Bears took the first seven points of the second half to increase their lead to 15 points and never really gave the Blue Bears a chance to get back into the contest. Shaw was able to open up a 23-point edge with 6:41 to play in the game, a lead the Blue Bears didn't overcome.
The Blue Bears shot 31.1 percent from the field including 18.8 percent from beyond the arc while Shaw shot 47.2 percent from the field. Livingstone was taken apart in the paint as Shaw won the battle down low 34-16. Livingstone also only got three points off their bench.
With the loss, the Blue Bears fell to 10-11 overall, 7-8 in the conference and 2-3 in the division. Shaw improved to 12-10 overall and 9-6 in the CIAA.
The Livingstone men will return home on Thursday evening when they play host to the St. Augustine's Falcons at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the teams this season. The first contest was postponed due to weather and a makeup date has not yet been announced.
