SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak as they downed the Lincoln University Lions 87-73 Monday evening.
With the victory the Blue Bears improved to 8-6 overall while Lincoln fell to 2-12.
Senior forward Jarred Stockton scored a season-high 28 points and also grabbed eight boards in the victory. Sophomore forward Greg Henry notched his third double-double of the season as he scored 21 points and grabbed 12 boards. Senior guard Aaron Caruthers finished the game with 20 points.
Livingstone got out of the gate quickly, scoring the first nine points of the game in less than three minutes. The Blue Bears increased their lead to double-digits at 15-5 with 13:02 to play in the contest. The Blue Bear lead slowly increased over the next 10 minutes and the Blue Bears hit a 21-point edge with 3:31 to play in the first half. The Blue Bears took a 44-23 lead into the locker room.
At halftime, Stockton had totaled 17 of his points while Henry had 12 points and six boards.
Lincoln tried to cut into the Livingstone lead early in the second half, but the Blue Bears weathered the Lion attack. Livingstone held a 20-point lead with 18:25 to play, but back-to-back three pointers by Stockton quickly jumped the lead back to 26 points.
Livingstone's largest lead of 28 points with 16:43 to play was cut down to 20 by the Lions with just over 10 minutes to play in the game and under 20 with nine minutes remaining. Lincoln was able to cut the Blue Bear lead down to 13, but it was too little, too late as there were only two minutes left on the clock. The Blue Bears converted free throws late to seal the 87-73 victory.
As a team the Blue Bears shot 50 percent from the field including 60 percent from beyond the three-point arc. The Blue Bears continued to struggle slightly at the charity stripe, hitting only 20 of 34 attempts. Livingstone won the battle of the boards 46-32 but turned the ball over four more times than the Lions.
The Blue Bear men will be back in action on the road on Saturday at Virginia State. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
