Blue Bears Down Morris 86-58 For Fifth-Straight Victory

Stockton Records Double-Double With 14 Points & 10 Boards

, NC – The Livingstone men's basketball team fought off Morris College Thursday evening for an 86-58 victory, their fifth in a row.

 

With the victory, the Blue Bears improved to 5-2 overall. 

 

Senior guard Megail Cannon led the Blue Bears with 24 points and also pulled down eight boards.  Junior guard Jarred Stockton record a double-double as he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Also in double-figure scoring was sophomore forward Greg Henry who scored 17 and junior guard Donte Durant who notched 15 points.

 

Despite the 28-point spread, the game was much closer as Morris trailed by only eight with 6:45 to play.  Livingstone, however held Morris to only six points over the last 6:45 while scoring 26 points to reach the final score of 86-58.

 

Livingstone came out sluggish to start the game and Morris took advantage, jumping out to an early 10-2 edge.  The Blue Bears woke up and went on a 10-0 run of their own to take a 12-10 lead.  The Blue Bears continued to push Morris and held an eight-point edge with just over nine minutes to play.  Morris responded with their own pressure, taking eight of the next 11 points to cut their deficit to only two with just under four minutes left.  Missed shots late in the first half by Morris allowed the Blue Bears to build an eight-point lead at the half, 36-28.

 

The Blue Bears took the first seven points of the second half to go up 43-28 with 17:01 on the clock, but Morris to six straight to get the lead back down to single digits.  Each time Livingstone was able to extend their lead, Morris was right there with a run of their own.  Trailing by only eight with 6:06 left Morris looked primed to make a run at the Blue Bears, but the Livingstone defense shut down Morris in the final minutes to secure the victory 86-58.

 

As a team the Blue Bears shot 47 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from beyond the arc.  Livingstone pulled down 47 rebounds to Morris' 34.  The Blue Bears committed 27 turnovers while Morris turned the ball over 30 times.  Livingstone capitalized heavily on the Morris turnovers as they scored 29 points off of them.

 

The Livingstone men will be back in action on Saturday, January 2, 2010 when the host Virginia Union University at 7:30 p.m. at Trent Gym.
