Kenyon Garner Named Willie Davis Defensive Player of the Year presented by BOXTOROW

Salisbury, NC- Among the most prestigious honors in HBCU football are the annual HBCU Superlative Awards, presented by BOXTOROW, which recognize standout players across the nation. This year, Livingstone College defensive lineman Kenyon Garner earned one of the top distinctions — the Willie Davis Defensive Player of the Year award.

Garner, a sophomore from Okeechobee, Florida, has been a dominant force on the field. Already named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, he leads the nation in tackles for loss (27) and tackles for loss per game (2.7). He ranks third nationally in sacks (14) and is tied for second in solo sacks (13). Garner also tied for the CIAA lead in forced fumbles (3), recovered two fumbles, and recorded 55 tackles (39 solo).

In addition to these season-long accolades, Garner was recognized four times as CIAA Defensive Player of the Week during the conference's weekly honors — a testament to his consistent dominance throughout the year.

His season was highlighted by multiple standout performances:
  • Four games with two or more sacks, including a remarkable four-sack outing versus Bowie State (Sept. 20).
  • Five games with three or more tackles for loss, including an incredible 5.5 tackles for loss against Fayetteville State (Oct. 11).
This marks a historic achievement for Livingstone College, as the last time the program received a major HBCU Superlative Award was in 2022, when Kevin Larkins was honored as Rookie/Newcomer of the Year.

Garner's dominance on the defensive line has not only elevated his team but also solidified his status as one of the premier players in HBCU football. His relentless pursuit of quarterbacks and ability to disrupt offenses make him a name to watch in the coming seasons.
