Roger Ray Scores 17 in LC's 77-69 Loss at Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE - Livingstone College junior guard Roger Ray scored a game-high 17 points but it was not enough, as Fayetteville State downed the Blue Bears 77-69 in a CIAA men's basketball game at Capel Arena on Wednesday night.

Ray, finished 5 of 12 from the field and 2-of-6 from long range for the Blue Bears. Fellow teammate Lydell Elmore scored 14 points while Cameryn Carpenter had 14 points.

Collectively, LC shot 44.1% (26-of-58) from the field and just 31.7% (6-of-19) from three-point range.

For the Broncos, Mark Burton had 15 points while teammates JaQuel Richmond and Joshua Bryany finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Broncos managed a 50.9% (28-of-55) effort from the field and a 42% (9-of-21) outing from long range.

In the first half, neither team could take a significant advantage early, as FSU built their largest lead, eight points (23-15) at the 8:39 mark. LC would chip away at the FSU lead, eventually to go up one on a three pointer from Carpenter to give LC the 29-28 lead.

FSU would go on to stretch the lead to 30-29 after a Bronco layup remaining and would take the 36-33 lead into halftime.

In the second half, FSU would gain their largest lead of 12 points (69-57) with 3:20 remaining after a three pointer from Denzell Hosch. LC would then claw back, going on a run to close to within 72-63 with 1:56 remaining after a Malik Smith layup. LC would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way, with FSU eventually taking the 77-69 win.

The loss drops the Blue Bears to 15-8 overall and 8-6 in CIAA play while Fayetteville State improves to 6-16 and 5-10 in CIAA action.

LC jumps back into CIAA Southern Division play this Saturday, Feb. 16 with a 6:00 p.m. road game at Johnson C. Smith.
