SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone women's and men's basketball teams were honored Wednesday at a special assembly hosted on campus.
Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr., Livingstone President and Salisbury Mayor, Ms. Susan W. Klutz recognized both teams for their achievements throughout the season.
The women's basketball team was recognized for its numerous individual honors, its NCAA regional ranking for three consecutive weeks and for being awarded the 2011 John B. Mclendon award for sportsmanship at the CIAA Tournament.
The men's basketball team who reached the CIAA Championship for the first time in the school's history was also recognized for their many achievements. Mayor Klutz gave a special presentation, presenting a proclamation that proclaimed March 9, 2011 as Livingstone College Men's Basketball Day in the City of Salisbury.
The full text of the proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, the 2010-2011 Livingstone College Men's Blue Bears basketball team has completed a wonderfully successful season with a winning season record of 17-12; and
WHEREAS, it is the first time in school history that the Livingstone College Men's Blue Bears basketball team progressed to the championship game of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament; and
WHEREAS, Senior Darius Cox and Junior Greg Henry were named as members of the All-CIAA Tournament Team and Darius Cox was named the championship game Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, the Blue Bears demonstrated composure, dignity and sportsmanship both on and off the court throughout their season; and
WHEREAS, the Blue Bears exemplified the team concept by playing hard, playing smart and playing together toward a common objective; and
WHEREAS, the coaching staff, under the leadership of Head Coach James Stinson, Jr., provided direction and instilled confidence in a team playing at the highest level of collegiate basketball; and
WHEREAS, Head Coach James Stinson, Jr. was named CIAA Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Livingstone College Men's basketball team was recognized for having the highest grade point average among CIAA teams, with an average of 2.89; and
WHEREAS, Livingstone College, through its athletic and academic programs, serves as an important contributor to the culture, history and quality of life of the Salisbury community.
NOW, THEREFORE, in the honor of their remarkable season, I, Susan W. Klutz, Mayor of the City of Salisbury, North Carolina, on behalf of the Salisbury City Council, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM, this day, March 9, 2011 as LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL DAY and encourage all citizens to celebrate the accomplishments of this team, its coaching staff, faculty, administration and fans of Livingstone College for their hard work, dedication and support of Livingstone College Blue Bears basketball.
