SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone volleyball team downed Johnson & Wales, 3-1, and Edward Waters 3-0, Saturday inside Trent Gymnasium.
The non-conference victories helped improve Livingstone's overall record to 9-8 on the season.
In the first game against the Johnson & Wales Wildcats, the Blue Bears won 26-24, 25-13, 18-25 and 25-22. Livingstone looked to have the first set in hand, but the Wildcats battled back sending the set into extra points, but the Blue Bears endured to take the set. The Blue Bears cruised through the second set, but Johnson & Wales rallied in the third to force a fourth set.
In the fourth set the two teams were even through the first 20 points, but Livingstone was able to gain a small 14-10 advantage. The Wildcats battled back with six-straight points to grab a 16-14 lead. The two squads went back and forth and again were tied at 22-22, but Livingstone was able to take the final three points to take the fourth set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
Junior Phylicia Egbuna led the Blue Bears with 19 kills and a .302 hitting percentage. Egbuna also added 14 digs to lead the team and had five block assists. Freshman LaPria Saunders led Livingstone with 23 assists while Natalia Felix had 14. Junior Garreesa Henry had a solid outing with seven kills, no errors and a .583 hitting percentage.
As a team the Blue Bears recorded 42 kills with 15 errors and a .260 hitting percentage. They also tallied 37 assists, 13 service aces, 54 digs and 10 total team blocks.
In the second contest, the Blue Bears were looking to avenge a defeat to Edward Waters earlier this season and they did so in convincing fashion.
Livingstone never allowed Edward Waters to think they had a chance in this match. The Blue Bears downed the Tigers 25-14, 25-9 and 25-15.
Egbuna had another strong outing, leading the Blue Bears with 12 kills and seven service aces. Saunders and Felix both added 13 assists each while freshman Iman Isom finished with a game-high 11 digs.
Livingstone will return to the court at home on Tuesday when they host divisional foe St. Augustine's College in a 6 p.m. contest.
