Blue Bear Volleyball Falls 3-0 At Fayetteville State

Livingstone Hosts Winston-Salem Wednesday at 6 p.m.

, NC – The Blue Bear volleyball team was unable to get its offense started Monday in a three-set loss to divisional foe Fayetteville State University.

 

In the first set the Blue Bears fell behind early 7-2 but were able to make a strong comeback to get within one point at 10-9.  The Broncos squashed Livingstone's momentum, taking the next four points to open up 14-9 advantage.  Fayetteville kept Livingstone from making any serious run and took the first set 25-19.

 

The Blue Bears held strong with the Broncos early in the second set before unforced errors started to plague Livingstone.  Fayetteville held a one-point edge at 13-12, but two consecutive receive errors followed by two consecutive attack errors by the Blue Bears increased the Bronco lead to 17-12.  Livingstone was able to overcome the setbacks in the middle of the second set, but the errors reappeared late in the set which allowed Fayetteville to take the second set 25-21.

 

Livingstone dug itself into a hole early in the third set that, despite a late rally, the Blue Bears couldn't get out of.  The score was tied 4-4 early in the third set, but Fayetteville rattled off a 16-3 run that gave it a 20 -7 lead.  The Blue Bears staged a small rally late in the set but could get only as close as six points at 22-16 before Fayetteville took the third set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

 

Lakitta Hicks led the Blue Bears with six kills while Shannon Allen had 10 assists and Michelle Thompson had nine digs. 

 

As a team the Blue Bears had 20 kills with a .060 hitting percentage with 12 assists, five service aces, 24 digs and eight team blocks.  The Broncos finished with 38 kills and a .174 hitting percentage with 28 assists, eight service aces, 26 digs and three team blocks.

 

The Blue Bears fell to 10-10 overall, 6-7 in the CIAA and 2-4 in the division while Fayetteville improved to 11-4 overall, 11-3 in the conference and 6-1 in the division.

 

Livingstone will return home on Wednesday to host the Rams of Winston-Salem State University at 6 p.m. inside New Trent Gymnasium.
