Livingstone College Volleyball is gearing up for an exciting season with a powerful new class of recruits. Head Coach Ericka Charleston shares her thoughts on three standout athletes and introduces the newest additions to the Lady Blue Bears family.
Destiny Drakeford – Middle Blocker (Transfer from Life University, GA)
Coach Charleston had her eye on
Destiny Drakeford long before she joined the Blue Bears. Originally a top prospect, Destiny took a different path to Life University before ultimately choosing Livingstone for its culture and competitive spirit.
"She's a dual-sport athlete with an incredible arm span and unmatched energy on the court," said Coach Charleston. "What really stood out was her desire to be coached and grow with a program. She sees the vision I have for this team and wants to be a part of it."
At 6'2", Destiny brings size, strength, and a fierce mentality to the middle blocker position—an area the team is looking to fortify this season.
Celestine Hayes – Middle Blocker (Transfer from American River College)
A defensive powerhouse at the net, Celestine Hayes is described by Coach Charleston as "the missing puzzle piece."
"She closes the block well and brings a family-first mindset," Charleston shared. "She's originally from Hawaii and grew up in California, so she's excited to experience the HBCU culture for the first time."
What sealed the deal? A conversation with Celestine's junior college coach.
"Her coach told me she's a born leader—an extension of the bench without even being asked. That's the kind of presence we need."
Justyce McKinnie – Setter (Bishop McNamara High School / Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club)
Incoming freshman Justyce McKinnie is already making waves. A standout from Bishop McNamara High School, she also competed with the elite Maryland Juniors—one of the most competitive volleyball clubs on the East Coast.
"She's a taskmaster with a great personality," said Charleston. "She communicates exceptionally well, which is a must for a setter. She's also defensively minded and brings a high volleyball IQ."
Her visit to Livingstone sealed the connection.
"She bonded instantly with the team. The chemistry was there, and both she and the players felt she belonged here."
More Talent on the Rise
Joining Destiny, Celestine, and Justyce are three more promising recruits:Â
Da'Maia Bryant,Â
Yareliz Perez-Cadanas, andÂ
Gabrielle Williams. Coach Charleston sees them as key contributors who will benefit from the leadership and experience already on the court.
"We recruited five bigs—three of them over six feet—and two who will learn from our veterans. These players are here to fill the shoes of our five graduating seniors and to elevate our game."
With exceptional blocking skills, court awareness, and a hunger to compete, this incoming class is poised to make an immediate impact.
