Women’s Flag Football Debut Ends in Quarterfinal Loss to Johnson C. Smith

Charlotte, NC — Last year, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) proudly announced the official launch of Women's Flag Football at eight of its member institutions, set to begin in Spring 2025.

To celebrate the launch, the CIAA hosted the inaugural CIAA Women's Flag Football Championship on April 11–12, 2025, at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina — marking a historic milestone for the conference and for women's sports as a whole.

Final Seeding Rankings:
  1. Virginia Union University (5–2)
  2. Winston-Salem State University (5–2)
  3. Johnson C. Smith University (5–2)
  4. Claflin University (4–3)
  5. Fayetteville State University (4–3)
  6. Livingstone College (3–4)
  7. Bowie State University (2–5)
  8. Bluefield State University (0–7)
The tournament officially kicked off on April 11 with quarterfinal match ups, as eight institutions battled for a spot in the semifinals and a chance at the championship title.

Livingstone College proudly took the field against host Johnson C. Smith University in a tightly contested, defense-heavy match up. Despite their determination and effort, Livingstone fell short with a final score of 7–2, ending their championship run in the quarterfinal round.

This inaugural championship not only marks a new chapter for the CIAA but also serves as a key moment in the continued growth of women's flag football as the NCAA explores its recognition as an emerging sport. The excitement and momentum from this event will carry into the Spring 2025 season, as institutions begin to officially integrate the sport into their athletic programs.
