ORANGEBURG, South Carolina – The Livingstone Women's Basketball team got outlasted by the Panthers of Claflin University Saturday afternoon in Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center, 60-56.
The Blue Bears drop to (9-14,3-9), and The Panthers improve to (11-10,4-8).
Jamiah Lane led the Blue Bears with 14 points. Alexis Lake followed with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Panthers Janelle Sample led with 17 points. Lauren Scott followed with 14 points. Nya Morris finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Livingstone shot 41.3% from the field (26-63) and 57.1% from the free-throw line (4-7).
The Blue Bears return to action Monday, February 6, hosting Salem University.
The Panthers went on a quick 5-0 run. A layup by Jardyn Alexander gave the Blue Bears their first lead, 6-5. Lauren Scott hit a jumper to put the Panthers back up by four with 3:12 left in the first quarter, 14-10. A layup by Alexis Lake cut the Panthers' lead to two with 2:13 left in the first quarter.
A foul by Varvara Papakonstant sent Dior Shelton to the line for two. Shelton made both and gave the Panthers a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers took a ten-point lead with 2:53 left in the second quarter, 31-21. A foul by Jayla Dixon sent Alexis Lake to the line for two. Lake made both to cut the Panthers' lead to four, 32-28.
A last-minute layup by Lauren Scott put the Panthers up by six at the end of the second quarter, 34-28.
The third quarter belonged to the Blue Bears, as they outscored the Panthers 16-11.
The Blue Bears tied it up at 34 to the start of the third quarter. The Blue Bears took a seven-point lead with 3:47 left in the third quarter, 44-37. The Panthers regained the lead at the end of the third quarter with a three-pointer by Janelle Sample, 45-44.
The Blue Bears fought in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Panthers.
The Blue Bears ended the night with 32 bench points versus the Panthers' 28.
The Blue Bears out worked the Panthers in the paint 50-12. Claflin outrebounded Livingstone 38-37.
