WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina – The Livingstone College men's basketball team dropped their final regular season game to Winston-Salem State Saturday evening 65-56 in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The Blue Bears finish (11-14, 7-9) in the season, while Winston-Salem State University ends the season (17-8, 9-7).
Livingstone was led by Detionne Leach with 16 points. Khyree Temple finished with 11 points.
Winston-Salem State University was paced by Jaylen Alston with 16 points. Samage Teel followed with 13 points. Jaylon Gibson finished with 12 points.
The Blue Bears took a 17-14 lead with 7:35 left in the first half. The Blue Bears continued to add to their lead with a 26-16 advantage over the Rams with 3:58 to go. A layup by Dyquavis Wilkins put the Rams down 28-24 at the half.
The Rams took a 42-38 lead over the Blue Bears with 10:17 left in the game. A jumper by Jaylen Alston gave the Rams a 53-42 lead with 5:57 left in the second half. Two good free throws by Detionne Leach got the Blue Bears within nine with 5:33 to go, 53-44.
The Rams took another double-digit lead over the Blue Bears with 3:18 left in the second half, 58-48. Another good layup by Detionne Leach put the Blue Bears down 58-54 with 1:42 left in the game. The Rams then went on a 7-0 run to secure the win.
Livingstone would end the game shooting 38.2% (21-of-55). Winston-Salem State would make 22 of 57 overall for 38.6 percent.
The Rams shot 84.2% from the free-throw line (16 out of 19). The Blue Bears went 60.0% from the free-throw line 12-of-20.
Livingstone outrebounded Winston-Salem State, 38-33.
The Blue Bears will travel to Baltimore, Maryland to face Elizabeth City State University Tuesday, February 21 for the first round of the CIAA basketball tournament. The first tip is set for 8:50 p.m in CFG Bank Arena.
