PETERSBURG, Virginia – The Blue Bears were down 19 late in the third quarter, and fought back to pull within four of the Trojans with 1:51 left in the fourth quarter.
The Livingstone Women's Basketball team fell to Virginia State University Sunday afternoon in the Multipurpose Center, 60-54.
The Blue Bears drop to (4-10,0-5) and The Trojans improve to (7-7,3-2).
Thalia Carter led the Blue Bears with 12 points. Alyssa Boyce followed with 10 points.
The Trojans Sommer Blakemore and J'Aunna Robinson led with 14 points and seven rebounds. Kalyn Ervin followed with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kylah Webb finished with 10 points.
Livingstone shot 23.2% from the field (16-69) and 70.4% from the free-throw line (19-27).
The Blue Bears return to action Wednesday, January 11 when they travel to Shaw University. The first tip is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
Alyssa Boyce drove to the paint for a layup giving the Blue Bears the first two of the afternoon. The Trojans remained scoreless for the first three minutes of the game. Andresia Alexander fouled Sommer Blackemore sending her to the line to shoot two. Blakemore made one out of two shots, 2-1. J'Aunna Robinson hit a jumper to give the Trojans the lead, 3-2 with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter.
Another two minutes passed with both teams scoreless. Shayla Sweeney made one out of two free throws to add to the Trojans' lead, 4-2. The Trojans took an eight-point lead with :44 left in the first quarter, 12-4. Samiyah Briggs hit a three right before the end of the quarter to cut the Trojans' lead to five, 12-7.
The Trojans took a 14-point lead late in the second quarter, 28-14. The Blue Bears only scored ten points in the second quarter versus the Trojans 20. The Trojans held a 15-point lead over the Blue Bears at halftime, 32-17.
The Blue Bears came out of the half cutting the Trojans' lead with Jamiah Lane hitting both free throws, 32-19.
The Trojans took a 19-point lead over the Blue Bears after Kylah Webb made two out of two free throws, 48-29. Samiyah Briggs hit another three right before the end of the third quarter to cut the Trojans' lead, to 49-34.
Ny'Asia Green hit a three to cut the Trojans' lead to under 10 at the seven-minute mark in the fourth quarter, 51-42. Kamryn Anthony fouled Alyssa Boyce sending her to the line for two. Boyce made both free throws to cut the Trojans' lead to four, 58-54. Sommer Blakemore put the Trojans back up by six with two good free throws, 60-54. With :14 left in the game Thalia Carter stole the ball and a fast break to the other end of the court. Carter scored the last two of the game, 60-56.
The Blue Bears had 18 points off of the Trojans' turnovers. The Blue Bears had 35 bench points versus the Trojans' 11.
Virginia State had 20 points in the paint versus Livingstone's 18.
