Livingstone College Names Steve Wallace Head Volleyball and Softball Coach

SALISBURY - Livingstone College Athletics has named Steve Wallace as head volleyball and softball coach. A native of Washington, D.C. but has been a Virginia resident for the past 25 years.

Wallace worked at Luna Community College from 2019-2021 as a head softball coach. His responsibilities included recruiting student-athletes according to the NJCCA guidelines, reviewing student grades for eligibility reasons, and providing leadership and administration of the program.

He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA in 1998 and completed a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2002.

Wallace worked as a softball coach at Jarvis Christian University from 2014-2018 and managed the day-to-day operations for the Jarvis Christian University athletic program. Wallace has served in other roles such as Assistant Athletic Director at Virginia University of Lynchburg, and head softball, volleyball, and bowling coach at Saint Paul's College from 2004-2011.

Wallace has been coaching for over two decades. He has coached many sports over the course of his career. Including, volleyball, bowling, basketball, and softball.

He recently coached high school softball at Freedom High School in Woodbridge, VA. As softball coach at Freedom, Mr. Wallace monitored the academic performance of student-athletes in addition to athletic programs and educated athletes in rules, strategies, sportsmanship, and performance principles.

Steve Wallace wears many hats. He is a coach, mentor, and motivational speaker wrapped into one. He genuinely cares about his athletes and encourages them to be successful on or off the field.

Those who know Steve Wallace well, affectionately call him "Stevie Wonder", not so much for musical ability, but for his track record of producing champions on the field and court and also in the classroom. He has a "knack" for working with little and producing greatly. Both his volleyball teams and softball teams at Virginia University of Lynchburg (2011-2013) maintained a team GPA of 3.42 and 3.46 respectively. Perhaps, his greatest accomplishment came in May 2013 when he took a well-coached softball team from Virginia University of Lynchburg to the National Softball World Series for Small Colleges in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Virginia University of Lynchburg is one of six Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the conference and the first HBCU to be invited to play. Although VUL did not win the World Series, they gained an overwhelming among of respect for their academic success with two members of the team being recognized for maintaining a 4.00 GPA, their sportsmanship, and competitive spirit when ranked 9th in the USCAA Softball Poll.

Wallace has received numerous awards including Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball coach of the year (2009), Saint Paul's College; CIAA Bowling Coach of the Year (2002), Virginia State University; and CIAA Bowling Coach of the Year (2006), Saint Paul's College.

Wallace is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, The National Tenpin Coaches Association, and the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association. Mr. Wallace served on the NCAA Regional Softball Committee and was selected as the NCAA Atlantic Softball Regional Site Supervisor in 2010.

"I am excited to work with student-athletes and develop a competitive, hardworking culture focused on getting better each day.", said coach Wallace.

"The goal is to win championships and represent the campus and community in a positive manner." It's a blessing and I appreciate the opportunity to coach at Livingstone College."

In introducing Coach Wallace, Director of Athletics Lamonte Massie-Sampson said, "Livingstone College is truly blessed with the addition of Steven Wallace. He will bring a new look to our two programs. His coaching experience will help our women on and off the court/field. We welcome him to the family!"

"I'm going to build on the foundation that has already been set on the volleyball court and softball field." said coach Wallace.

Livingstone would like to officially welcome head volleyball and softball coach, Steven Wallace and is looking forward to a dynamic first season. With the support of the athletics department and campus community, we know Wallace will make positive contributions to Livingstone College.
