Blue Bears Drop Home Opener to Coker University

SALISBURY – Livingstone College and Coker University traded leads for the first 12 minutes in Tuesday evening game at William Trent Gymnasium, but Coker University overcame that with a win, 93-80. 

The Blue Bears fall to 1-4 in the season, while Coker University improves to 5-1.

Livingstone was led by Teon Tiller recording 14 points. Followed by DeMarr McCrae finishing with 13 points. Detionne Leach and Paul Tako finished with 10 points. 

Coker's Demar Anderson paced his team with 23 points. Followed by Jordan Jones with 18 points. Tate Mulkey and Mahoud Bangura both finished with 17 points. The Blue Bears struggled to close the gap after the Cobras took a 10-point lead with a layup by Zavier Measmer. Brandon Murray got the Blue Bears within seven with a good layup in the paint. Teon Tiller would score the last point of the half to hold the Cobras' lead under 10, 41-33.

Tiller came out the half continuing to cut the Cobras' lead with a layup in the paint, 41-35. The Cobras would go up by 12 at the 10-minute mark. The Blue Bears would get within eight at the six-minute mark, with a goof layup by Demarr McCrae, 73-65.

Jamie Muldowney extended the Cobra's lead by 13 with two good free throws, 82-69. The Blue Bears cut the Cobras' lead to under 10 with 1:49 remaining, 86-78.

The Blue Bears would only score two more in the game, while the Cobras score six more, 93-80.

Livingstone would end the game shooting 47.5% (29-of-61). Coker University would make 31-of-56 overall for 55.4 percent. The Cobras shot 70.0% from the free-throw line (21-out of-30). The Blue Bears went 81.8% from the free-throw line 18-of-22.

Livingstone outrebounded Coker, 26-24.

The Blue Bears will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina for the Johnson C. Smith Classic. Livingstone will face Johnson & Wales Friday, November 25.
