SALISBURY – The Livingstone Women's Basketball team defeated Apprentice School Newport in William Trent Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, 70-42.
The Blue Bears improve to 1-2, and The Builders fall to 1-4.
Jamiah Lane led Livingstone with 18 points, six rebounds, and one block. Followed by Samiyah Briggs with 16 points.
The Builders' Breanna Jada Bryant finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Livingstone shot 30.5% from the field (25-82) and 57.7% from the free-throw line.
The Blue Bears return to action Tuesday, November 22 when they host UVA-Wise at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Livingstone jumped out to a 10-4 run against Apprentice School Newport after Samiyah Briggs hit one out of two free throws. The Blue Bears held their lead through the end of the first quarter. Thalia Carter completed two good free throws to extend the Blue Bears lead by 10.
Jamiah Lane worked the paint Saturday afternoon. Lane pulled up in the paint to add to the Blue Bears lead with 1:21 to go in the second quarter. The Builders Jada Bryant recorded the last basket of the second quarter to pull within four of the Blue Bears going into the half, 27-23.
Jamiah Lane came out adding yet again to the Blue Bears score in the first :09 of the third quarter, 29-23.
At the eight-minute mark the Blue Bears went back up by 10 over the Builders. The Blue Bear defense kept the Builders scoreless for the first three minutes of the third quarter.
Samiyah Briggs added three from the top of the arch, extending the Blue Bear lead by 20. The Blue Bears continued their 20+ lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Blue Bears held a 32 point lead over the Builders at the three-minute mark. The Blue Bear defense only allowed the Builders to score 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Livingstone scored 27 points off of turnovers. Apprentice allowed the Blue Bears to have 16 second chance points.
The Livingstone bench got in the game and dominated, scoring 34 points off the bench. The Blue Bears finished the afternoon with 40 points in the paint.
