INSTITUTE, West Virginia – The Livingstone Women's Basketball team dropped its season opener, falling to West Virginia State University in Walker Convocation Center Saturday night, 90-60.
"We gave them too many second chance points by not rebounding the ball on the defensive end," said head coach Chiante Wester "I feel foul trouble played a factor as well."
The Blue Bears fall to 0-1, and West Virginia State improved to 1-0.
Alyssa Boyce led Livingstone with 12 points. Jamiah Lane led the Blue Bears in rebounds with eight.
The Yellowjakects Hannah Shriver finished with 18 points, going 3-3 in three-pointers, and Anysa Jordan had 15 for West Virginia State as did Imani Reid.
Livingstone turned the ball over 39 times, and West Virginia State scored 38 points off turnovers.
The Blue Bears return to the action this Sunday to take on the Glenville State College Pioneers at 1 p.m. ET.
Livingstone started the game with the first points before Hannah Shriver scored her first three of the night. Andresia Alexander found Alyssa Boyce in the corner for a three-pointer with 7:28 left in the first quarter to extend the Blue Bears lead of the game, 7-5, but the Yellowjackets scored the next four off of free throws.
Andresia Alexander scored her first point of the season, making one out of two free throws. Turnovers and missed shots resulted in the Blue Bears being scoreless for two minutes. While the Yellowjackets extended their lead by 13, 23-10.
The Blue Bears had a tough time scoring, only scoring three points within the first four minutes of the second quarter.
Samiyah Briggs recorded her first collegiate three-pointer at the six-minute mark. The Blue Bears cut the Yellowjackets lead to under 20 when Briana Chambers put two in.
The Yellowjackets held a 50-27 lead over the Blue Bears at the half.
West Virginia State continued to add to their lead after the half when Anysa Jordan drained a three-pointer. Andresia Alexander answered with a three-pointer of her own, 53-32.
The Blue Bears got within 15 when Thalia Carter hit a jumper at the six-minute mark. The Yellowjackets against extended their lead by the end of the quarter to 23, 69-46.
The Blue Bears scored the least amount of points in the fourth quarter.
