SALISBURY, N.C. - Head Women's basketball coach Chiante Wester has hired Maurice Sumter as the new assistant women's basketball coach.

Sumter previously served as the assistant men's basketball coach at Christopher Newport University under John Krikorian where he aided the program in winning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference championship after just one season. Prior to Christopher Newport, Sumpter spent two seasons assisting at Virginia State University under the guidance of CIAA legendary coach Lonnie Blow. With Coach Sumpter's help, the program had a lot of success including an overall record of 55-9, a conference record of 32-4 and home record of 24-1 along with two regular season championships and a 2019 CIAA tournament championship. In his assistant roll he was heavily involved in academics, recruiting, day to day and travel operations, and administrative duties. As a player development coach, he worked with the front court position. His squad produced All-Americans in back to back seasons, and both went on to play professionally in Europe.
Sumter spent one season, 2016-17, as an assistant coach at Harcum Junior College, where his squad recorded a 22-9 record and a regular season conference championship. In 2015 Maurice volunteered at Old Dominion University in Virginia of Conference USA. He was able to observe multiple functions of the program that became the eventual Conference Champions. He also volunteered at Shaw University in 2014.
A Norfolk, Virginia, native by way of Alexandria, Virginia, Sumter was part of the very successful T.C. Williams High School program. In his time at T.C. Williams, he received numerous honors including All-District Player of the Year, 1st team All-Region, and All- Metropolitan team in the D.C. area. He also led his team to a 25-4 Record and a Regional Semi-final appearance.
In his junior and senior season he led the team in scoring, steals and second in rebounding and blocks. In both seasons he was named first team All-Independent and third team All-State Honors. He was also named Male Athlete of the Year at Longwood University. He was named top 5 greatest players of all time in the school's history by ESPN. Sumter finished his impressive career top 5 all-time leaders in scoring (1,604), rebounding (667), assists (274) steals (209) and blocks (135).
Sumter continued his playing career at Longwood University and was the first ever Division I men's basketball recruit in school history. Sumter went head to head with more than 15 eventual NBA players. In his junior and senior seasons, he led the team in scoring, steals, and was second in rebounding and blocks. In both seasons he was named first team All-Independent and third team All-State. He was also named Male Athlete of the Year at Longwood University, and was selected one of the top five players of all time in Longwood's history by ESPN. Sumter finished his impressive career in the top five all time in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks. After completing his career at Longwood, Sumter played three years professionally making stops in Holland, Portugal, and Macedonia.
