Blue Bears Hold Off Shaw in Overtime, 109-104

Roger Ray notched his second-straight game with 30 or more points as the Livingstone Blue Bears topped the Shaw University Bears
109-104 in a overtime thriller inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The win marks the second consecutive for the Blue Bears in the CIAA Southern Division.

Both teams exchanged baskets to open the contest before the Blue Bears took the lead with a 9-0 run 6 minutes into the first half.
The Bears would not score again until 2 minutes later, allowing the Blue Bears to maintain their 6 point lead (39-33) at halftime.

Lydell Elmore extended the lead to 8 (41-33) to open the second half before a 2 minute 7-0 run by Shaw cut the lead to 1 just under 2 minutes later. Missed shots and turnovers for the next 2 minutes doomed the Bears as Malik Smith (13 points), Cameron Carpenter (9 points), Lydell Elmore (24 points), Navar Elmore (9 points), and Roger Ray (33 points) contributed scoring to extend the Blue Bears' lead to 9 with 11 minutes remaining.  Shaw then turned up the defense and shooting with Nigel Martin and DaVaughn Kelsie sinking key baskets to tie the score at 70 with 7 1/2 minutes remaining. With both teams trading baskets until the final minute, Roger Ray and Lydell Elmore would tie the score again at 72 and 88 respectively to end regulation.

Anthony Tate (12 points) hit 3 3-pointers and the Blue Bears converted free throws in overtime to clinch the contest by 5 points.

The Blue Bears improve to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in the CIAA. The Bears fall to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the CIAA.

The Blue Bears next host the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls Saturday, January 18th. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
