Blue Bears Stay Unbeaten With 27 – 16 Victory Over ECSU

Salisbury, NC – As the Blue Bears defense takes the field, they looked to come up with another big game this week in the take away category.

With 4:30 left on the clock in the first quarter, Elizabeth City State University Vikings (ECSU) drove down the field but failed to find the end zone settling for 3 on a Jonathan Buck Field Goal taking the lead at 3-0.

On the ensuing drive, the Blue Bears supplied an answer when quarterback Miles Hayes was flushed out of the pocket, on an improvised throw, connecting with receiver Jaylen Askew for a 54 yard strike down the center of the field for the touchdown. Antoine Akundu's point after touchdown (PAT) brought  the score to 7-3 as the first quarter came to a close. Askew finished his day with 2 receptions 58 yards and a touchdown

As the second quarter rolled along, both defenses posed a brick wall against the other teams offense, with each exchanging punts until the Blue Bears broke the pattern with a 34 yard Antoine Akundu field goal. Bringing the score to 10-3 with 7:22 left in the half.

Coming out of half time Antoine Akundu kicks off to the Vikings with a pack of Blue Bears, tackling the ECSU return man at the 13 yard line. On first and ten, ECSU quarterback Kevin Caldwell drops back, SACK & FUMBLE!

Ziah Gibson breaks through the ECSU offensive line to register a sack at the 1 yard line and a fumble in the end zone that he scooped for a quick 6 points. With the PAT to follow, the Blue Bears extend their lead to 17-3 with 14:50 left in the 3rd quarter.

As the Blue Bears and Vikings trade possessions on punts, the Blue Bears offense was able to move the ball inside the red zone setting up an Antoine Akundu field goal making the score 20-3 with 2:56 left on the clock in the third quarter.

The Blue Bears made their way across the goal line one last time as Marquis Adams powers his way in for a 1 yard run providing the only rushing touchdown of the day bringing the score to 27 - 3.

The Vikings would later tack on two touchdowns as the game expired resulting in a final score of 27-16

Hayes finished with 15-25 210 yards and a touchdown. Through two weeks of play Livingstone leads the CIAA in passing yards and tied for first with the least sacks given up in the conference.

Providing a spark on defense was DE DaVante Adams, who seemed to every today as he registered a team high 8  tackles for the day.

The Blue Bears defensive secondary came up big  two weeks in a row with 2 more interceptions. Raymond McGuire, who also led the team in solo tackles for the game, and Dominic Alexander. The Blue Bears are now tied for front runner in the CIAA with 4 interceptions, and the only team in the CIAA with 4 interceptions by 4 different players.

The Blue Bears also registered 2 sacks with Ziah Gibson and Raheem Coxfield finding their way to ECSU's quarterback.

Livingstone's defense is now ranked 2nd in the conference for yards given up!

The team is back at Alumni Memorial Stadium this Saturday 9/21/2019 as they take on Allen University (SC). Kickoff is at 4:00PM.
