Ray Scores 20 points, but LC falls to Shaw, 86-77

RALEIGH — The Livingstone College men's basketball team stumbled out of the gate and could never recover as Shaw defeated the Blue Bears 86-77 on Wednesday evening.

Livingstone (8-10, 6-6 CIAA) fell behind in the first half and trailed by as much as 16 points. Shaw (15-8, 8-4) led at halftime, 48-36.

The Blue Bears fought back, eventually tying the score (73-73) on Deon Patterson's free throws with 3:09 remaining in the game. However, from that point, Shaw's Bears outscored Livingstone, 13-4, down the stretch.

Shaw did most of its damage in the final minutes at the foul line, but a 3-pointer from DeAngelo Stephens-Bell was key, turning a two-point game into a 78-73 lead.

Still, it was just a four-point game (79-75) with 36 seconds left, after a free throw by the Blue Bears' Rashard Todd. But free throws from Stephens-Bell and Cameron Golden moved Shaw back out to a seven-point lead.

Free throws from Shaw's Krishaun Myers at the 14-second mark made it 84-77, basically nailing down the victory.
Shaw shot 53 percent from the floor for the game (27-of-51), including 7-of-18 from the 3-point arc. The Bears were also 25-of-35 free throws.

Meanwhile, Livingstone made just 29 of its 63 shots (46 percent), struggling especially on 3-pointers (5-of-17, 29 percent). And while the Blue Bears committed just eight turnovers, they were out-rebounded, 37-27.

Guard Roger Ray led Livingstone with 20 points while Cameron Burhannon scored 18 and Patterson added 10.Shaw's Savon Goodman had a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting (8-of-11 at the foul line). Goodman had a double-double, also grabbing 15 rebounds.

Stephens-Bell followed Goodman with 19 points and Myers added 18.

Livingstone returns to action on Saturday, hosting Fayetteville State at New Trent Gym, at 4 p.m.
