Late Rally falls short for Blue Bears

SALISBURY — The Livingstone College men's basketball team trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but put together a tremendous second half comeback effort before falling late to Shaw University, 84-78, on Saturday evening at New Tent Gymnasium.

Roger Ray led the Blue Bears with 18 points and added five assists. Cameron Burhannon contributed 14 points and pulled down three boards, while Ramel Belfield recorded 12 points. Navar Elmore had a team-high six rebounds.

Perhaps, but there were no vultures circling overhead after Shaw (10-6, 4-2, 1-0) riddled LC with 61 percent shooting from the field. Savon Goodman, a 6-foot-6 forward shot 12-for-17 from the floor, paced all scorers with 29 points, snatched 11 rebounds and made four steals.

Shaw placed five scorers in double figures and opened double-digit leads in each half. The Bears used Goodman's three-point play and subsequent dribble-drive layup to mount a 35-22 edge with 5:38 remaining in the first half.

Livingstone never led until 5-10 sophomore Roger Ray drained a 3-pointer from the corner, capping a 9-0 LC run and providing a 54-53 lead with 13:36 to go.
Livingstone spent the last six minutes pushing forward. It drew as close as 75-69 when Lydell Elmore took a feed from McNeill and dunked with 2:50 remaining.

Livingstone shot a respectable 46 percent from the field, buried 11 3-pointers and out-rebounded Shaw, 33-32. The guests were 8-for-14 on three-point attempts. Burhannon went 5-for-9 from the field.

The Blue Bears have a few days off before they continue CIAA play when they travel to Fayetteville State on Jan 20.
