SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone volleyball team had a hard-fought match, but fell Friday evening 3-0 to the Fayetteville State Broncos inside New Trent Gymnasium.
Livingstone came out very strong in the first set. The Blue Bears grabbed an 8-4 lead and continued to lead for the majority of the opening set. Livingstone continued to lead at 19-16, but a 3-0 run by the Broncos tied the set at 19-19. The Blue Bears went back up 22-20 and the final points were hotly contested. The Blue Bears had set point at 24-22, but Fayetteville fought back to tie the set at 24-24. Another set point came for Livingstone at 25-24, but three straight points by the Broncos gave them the first set 27-25.
The first 14 points of the second set were all square before Fayetteville started to pull away. The Broncos took the next six points to grab a 13-7 lead. The Blue Bears fought back to tie the set at 19-19, but managed only one point over the final seven and Fayetteville State took the second set 25-20.
The Blue Bears got off to a strong start in the third set and were tied with the Broncos at 11-11. Fayetteville then went on a 6-1 run to grab a 17-12 edge. Despite a late charge by Livingstone, Fayetteville hung on for a 25-18, third set victory.
Junior Phylicia Egbuna led the Blue Bears with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage. Iman Isom finished with 10 digs and LaPria Saunders led the team with nine assists.
The Blue Bears fell to 5-6 overall, 4-4 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the division while the Broncos improved to 10-6 overall, 7-2 in the conference and 3-0 in the Southern Division.
The Blue Bears will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Charlotte, NC to take on rival Johnson C. Smith at 6 p.m.
