RALEIGH, NC – The Blue Bear volleyball team kicked off its divisional schedule with a 3-0 victory over the Shaw University Bears Wednesday evening.
Livingstone (5-7, 4-3, 1-0) got off to a strong start in the first set, thanks to hitting troubles from the Bears. The Blue Bears jumped out to a 10-4 edge and extended their lead to as much as 10 at 21-11 before taking the first set 25-16.
In the second set, Shaw matched the Blue Bears early and trailed by only two at 11-9 after the first 20 points. The two teams were all square at 13-13, but a 4-0 run by Livingstone gave it a 17-13 lead. Shaw got back within two at 19-17, but the Blue Bears closed the second set on a 6-0 run to win 25-17.
Shaw took the early edge in the third set 3-1, but Livingstone responded with a 6-0 run to grab a 7-3 advantage. The Blue Bears extended their lead to 14-7, but a 7-1 run by Shaw got it within one at 15-14. Livingstone held strong and allowed the Bears only three more points the remainder of the set, taking the third and final set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Junior Phylicia Egbuna led the Blue Bears with 13 kills and had a .345 hitting percentage. Senior Lakitta Hicks added eight kills and freshman LaPria Saunders added six. Saunders also had 13 assists while Natalia Felix had 12.
The Blue Bears will be back in action on Friday when they host CIAA foe Fayetteville State for a 6 p.m. contest.
