SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone volleyball team picked up its first division victory of the season Tuesday evening, downing the Shaw Bears 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17).
With the victory the Blue Bears improved to 9-8 overall, 5-5 in the conference and 1-2 in the division while Shaw fell to 3-9 overall, 3-8 in the CIAA and 0-4 in the division.
The Blue Bears got off to a good start in the first game, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Errors allowed Shaw to get back in the game at 3-3. Livingstone slowly regained control of the first game, grabbing an 8-4 advantage. Livingstone increased its lead to 15-10 and finished off the first game, winning 25-14.
Livingstone struggled at the beginning of the second game. After grabbing a 4-1 lead, Shaw battled back to take a 12-6 lead. The Bears continued to lead 15-10, but a 6-1 run by Livingstone squared the second game at 16-16. After a Shaw timeout, the Bears took the first point and then Livingstone rattled off a 9-2 run to take the second game 25-19.
The two teams battled through the first 20 points of the third game before the Blue Bears were able to grab an advantage. Livingstone then went on a 7-1 run to grab an 18-10 lead. Livingstone held off a late Shaw rally to take the third game 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Blue Bears were led by senior Michelle Thompson who finished with 14 kills, no errors and a .700 hitting percentage. Senior Shannon Allen led the Blue Bears with 22 assists while freshman Leigha Tillman finished with nine digs.
As a team the Blue Bears finished with 35 kills and a .304 hitting percentage with 26 assists, 10 service aces, 30 digs and 7.5 team blocks. Shaw finished with 22 kills, and a -.025 hitting percentage with 14 assists, three service aces and 27 digs.
The Blue Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, October 5 when they travel to St. Augustine's College for a 6 p.m. contest.
