Blue Bears Fall to Fayetteville State 3-0 in CIAA Volleyball Action

– The Livingstone volleyball team dropped its second division contest of the season Tuesday as the Fayetteville State Broncos downed the Blue Bears 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14) at New Trent Gym.

 

Livingstone came out strong in the first game and looked as though it was going to give the Broncos a run, but it couldn't sustain its momentum.  The Blue Bears were down only one at 8-7, but a 7-1 run by Fayetteville quickly gave them a 15-8 lead.  Livingstone got only as close as five points the rest of the game and Fayetteville won the first game 25-17.

 

The second game saw the Blue Bears have a strong start, a weak middle and a strong end that had a comeback fall just short.  The second game was tied at 6-6, but a 5-0 run by Fayetteville dashed the momentum for Livingstone and gave the Broncos an 11-6 lead.  Fayetteville held a 19-12 lead late in the game, but the Blue Bears were ready to mount a comeback.  The Blue Bears went on an 8-4 run and were within three at 23-20, but couldn't get any closer and Fayetteville took the second game 25-21.

 

Fayetteville came out strong in the third game and got stronger as the game progressed.  The Broncos led 7-3 early and extended their lead to 20-12 and eventually 25-14 for the final of game three.

 

Senior Michelle Thompson led the Blue Bears with 10 kills and also had a .217 hitting percentage.  Senior Shannon Allen led the team with 11 assists and also tallied 10 digs.

 

As a team the Blue Bears finished with 24 kills and a .227 hitting percentage along with 18 assists, 26 digs and four team blocks.  The Broncos had 42 kills with a .306 hitting percentage along with 32 assists, eight service aces, 31 digs and two team blocks.

 

With the loss the Blue Bears fell to 6-7 overall, 4-5 in the conference and 0-2 in the division.  Fayetteville State improved to 8-3 overall, 8-2 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the division.

 

The Blue Bears will return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Denmark, SC to take on Voorhees College.
