RALEIGH, NC – The Livingstone football team struggled to move the ball offensively Saturday as they amassed only 56 total yards as they fell 31-7 to the St. Augustine's College Falcons.
With the loss the Blue Bears fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference while the Falcons improved to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA.
Livingstone had 30 rushing attempts Saturday for negative 22 yards. Through the air didn't help the Blue Bears much more as they threw the ball 26 times for 78 yards.
St. Augustine's got on the board first in the opening quarter after Livingstone punted on their first drive. The Falcon's T. Laughinghouse took the punt back 43 yards for a touchdown to go up 7-0.
Through the remainder of the first half, while the Livingstone offense wasn't able to score, the defense kept the Blue Bears alive in the game. With 2:19 remaining in the half, the Falcons started a drive from their own 38-yard line. St. Augustine's moved the ball 59 yards on 12 plays and put through a field goal with two seconds left. Livingstone trailed the Falcons 10-0 at halftime.
After Livingstone punted on their first possession of the second half, the Falcons missed a 30-yard field goal and the Blue Bears took over. After two plays of the drive, senior quarterback Steven Williams took off running and fumbled at his own seven yard line. The ball was scooped up by the Falcons and taken into the end zone for a touchdown to put St. Augustine's up 17-0. St. Augustine's went up 24-0 early in the fourth quarter on a 38-yard touchdown run.
Livingstone got on the scoreboard midway through the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Bryan Aycoth connected with freshman halfback Terrill Gourdine for a touchdown. Livingstone trailed 24-7. St. Augustine's had a good runback on the ensuing kickoff and two plays later were back in the end zone. The Falcons took the game 31-7.
Williams played sparingly Saturday and completed three passes which now has him tied with Darryl Ardrey for the career pass completions record.
Williams will have a chance to break the record next Saturday when the Blue Bears travel back to Raleigh, NC to take on the Shaw Bears for a 4 p.m. contest. The game will be played at Millbrook High School.
