SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone Blue Bear volleyball team dropped a three-game match to the Chowan Hawks Friday in CIAA action.
Livingstone's record falls to 10-7 overall, 5-7 in the CIAA and 1-6 in the Western Division. Chowan improved to 20-7 overall, 12-1 in the conference and 7-1 in the division.
The Blue Bears struggled to get going offensively in the first set. Livingstone held a 2-1 lead early, but didn't see the positive side of the score for the remainder of the game. With the Blue Bears trailing 10-7, Chowan rattled off six-straight points to go up 16-7. Livingstone couldn't recover from such a large deficit and fell 25-16 in the first game.
The second game looked, early, like it was going to be a repeat of the first, but it quickly became an exciting battle into extra points. Chowan jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but Livingstone took nine of the next 11 points to go up 10-8. Livingstone increased their lead to 15-12, but the Hawks took the next three points to square the game at 15-15. The teams traded points one for one all the way to 25-25. With the score knotted at 25, Chowan took the final two points to take the second game 27-25.
Chowan again flexed it's muscle in the third game as they didn't allow the Blue Bears to stay in the game. The Hawks jumped out to a 7-1 lead early and easily took the third game 25-10 and the match 3-0.
Junior outside hitter Lashaundra Ferguson led the Blue Bears with 10 kills and hit .562. The team had 24 kills, 20 assists, six service aces and 30 digs for the match.
Livingstone will now travel to Raleigh, NC Monday to play the Shaw University Bears for a 6 p.m. contest.
