SALISBURY, NC – The Livingstone volleyball team dropped their fifth division match of the season Tuesday as they fell 3-0 to the Fayetteville State Broncos.
With the loss the Blue Bears fell to 10-6 overall, 5-6 in the CIAA and 1-5 in the Western Division. Fayetteville improved to 12-7 overall, 10-1 in the conference and 6-0 in the division.
Missed opportunities spelled trouble for Livingstone in the first game. The Blue Bears dropped behind the Broncos early 16-10. They fought back to get within four at 20-16, but a service error gave the ball back to Fayetteville. Livingstone was able to take the next two points to get within three at 21-18 and again at 22-19, but another service error cost the Blue Bears. Fayetteville took the first game 25-19.
A big seven-point run by the Broncos midway through the second game propelled Fayetteville to victory in the second game. Through the first 20 points the two teams were all square 10-10. With Fayetteville up 12-11, the Broncos rode the serving of Octavia Wynn to seven straight points to increase their lead to 19-11. Fayetteville held off a late Livingstone rally to take the second game 25-18.
Livingstone came out strong early in the third game, going up 8-4. Fayetteville fought back and trailing 14-12, took seven straight points to go up 19-14. The Blue Bears didn't give up as they were able to get back to all square at 20-20. Fayetteville, however, closed out the Blue Bears in the final seven points 25-22.
Junior outside hitter Lashaundra Ferguson led the Blue Bears with eight kills and also had two blocks.
The Blue Bears will next host the Chowan University Hawks at 6 p.m. Friday at the Trent Gym.
