Winston-Salem, NC- Livingstone College Softball struggled in their doubleheader against Winston-Salem State losing both games. Game 1 saw a tough 1-9 defeat, while Game 2 ended in a 2-10 loss.
Game 1: Winston-Salem State 9, Livingstone 1
In the first inning, the Rams struck first with an RBI sacrifice fly from Rodriguez that scored Ware. They added another run shortly after when Wimbush singled to shortstop to drive in Simmons, giving Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.
The second inning was a blow for Livingstone, as Winston-Salem extended their lead Smith stole second, and then Cooper stole home to make it 3-0. Thomas hit a two-run homer, followed by an RBI single from Rodriguez, bringing the score to 6-0 by the end of the second.
The Rams weren't done as Smith doubled in another run in the third, and then stole third and scored, making it 8-0. Thomas added his second home run of the game, a solo shot, to push the score to 9-0.
Livingstone managed to get on the board in the fourth inning. A wild pitch allowed
Alyse Stokes to advance to third, and
Tykera Lundy scored on another wild pitch, bringing the score to 9-1. But the offense couldn't generate enough to mount a comeback, and the game ended with a 9-1 final.
Game 2: Winston-Salem State 10, Livingstone 2
Livingstone took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on some miscues by the Rams.
Dusti Abshire scored on a wild pitch, and
Cianna Bullock came across after being caught stealing, as a wild pitch brought him home as well.
However, Winston-Salem responded quickly. A groundout RBI by Rodriguez scored Ware, cutting the lead to 2-1. In the fourth, the Rams took control with a series of hits and aggressive baserunning. Cooper's groundout scored Thomas, and then Vinson homered, driving in two more runs to make it 4-2.
The Rams' offense exploded in the fifth inning. A series of hits and errors pushed across six more runs. A double by Rodriguez scored Wilson, followed by a bunt single by Wimbush that brought in another run. Vinson was hit by a pitch to bring in another, and a string of singles culminated in a 10-2 lead for Winston-Salem, which would hold up through the final innings.
Livingstone will regroup and look to improve their performance as they travel to Benedict College tomorrow, April 23, for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
